Phil Mickelson’s Famous Chipping Drill

From ClubFaceUK on YouTube

Welcome to How to Chip Like a Pro. This is from Phil Mickelson’s Chipping Lesson 101.

Most amateur golfers will tend to be indecisive with the ball position and won’t distribute the weight correctly. This leads to shots like this where we thin it past the hole; Usually because the leading edge of the wedge becomes exposed impacts, causing that horrible thin.

Try this. If you want to chip low, have the ball placement towards the back of the foot and slightly lean the shaft forward, so the leading edge is down. Have your hands in front of the ball and have your weight on the leading leg.

Step two. If you want to chip high have the ball placement towards the front of the leading foot and again slightly lean the shaft forward and have the weight on the leading leg.

The key is to rotate through the shot and be confident. It’s important that you have your weight on that leading leg. I do 60/40. It keeps a leading edge down and allows the ball to pop up.

A good tip is to think about your landing spot. I never look at the hole when I’m chipping. I’m always thinking about that first bounce.
